The latter may be the preferred route as we will be heading for Nurburg on the way back, so that will probably take us around Budapest and Vienna anyway... If you're going to do Stelvio and stay in the area, I strongly recommend the Hotel Tannenheim on the Trafoi side. The boss is a great guy, the food is top notch and the hotel itself is inexpensive and quite stylish.
