Competition is always good. It's been clear for a while that Apple needs to drop it's exclusivity with various networks. They've had the chance to settle and prove the iPhone, establish it as more than just a flash-in-the-pan and exclusivity has been a big barrier to further market growth. I can't see any real benefit to Apple in staying exclusive any more. It only serves to restrict their potential market.
Hopefully this move in the UK will be a precursor to them making the same change here. AT&T's network and customer service have a very bad reputation, and a lot of people are seriously frustrated with the number of dropped calls, calls that never arrive (even when in strong signal), text messages that take several hours to arrive and so on. About a month ago AT&T had an outage on their visual voicemail service for a few days in the San Francisco bay area, which they didn't bother telling people about. First people found out was when the service suddenly came back on and they found lots of voicemails waiting. I would suspect if AT&T loses the exclusivity they will find their subscribers leaving in droves.

Be interested to see what they do with their data packages as, to my knowledge, O2 are the only network who don't impose a 500MB limit on their "unlimited" data service.

They do however have a reported FUP in the 200MB range. Not sure if that applies to the iPhone packages though.
Got a really weird problem. On one particular USB port, my iPhone keeps connecting and disconnecting every second. Windows goes absolutely nuts. No idea what's causing it (I don't have iTunes on that PC - I just want it to charge the phone). |

Just got 'unlimited' data on Vodafone and from what I can tell it is unlimited unless you take the piss.

Noticed there's a new PwnageTool out for the 3GS, that'll do 3.1 firmware. Trouble is, I don't know how to restore custom firmware images. The usual method (Option+Restore) never worked for me. Maybe it's because I'm using a Windows keyboard.

Do you have a Windows machine you could do it on, Mark? You'll need to run the tool on OS X but there's no reason why you can't them copy that custom IPSW to a Windows box and do the firmware change from there.
It could indeed be a Windows keyboard getting in the way. I've got a couple of OS X machines with a Windows keyboard, one uses ALT for option, the other uses the Windows key. I'm going to have a bash at it on Friday assuming I get some time. |

I've tried both ALT and Windows keys, and have even installed DoubleCommand.
I have an aversion (probably unfounded) to installing iTunes on a PC, but there's always the VM option (or the Windows XP partition on the Mac). On the subject of iPod/iTunes, is there a way to add multiple albums to a playlist and have that show up on the iPhone? I'd rather set up the playlist on the iPhone so I don't have to think ahead, but either will work. |

In your music library, right click on an album (I do it from the grid view and click on the album cover) and add it to a playlist. Once this is done then in the iPhone control screen, select the music tab and in there click to sync the selected playlist...

OK, that makes sense. Thanks. I'll group my most used combinations of albums that way. Would still be nice if there was a way to do that directly on the device, however.

Mark:
Go to iPod, then go to Playlists, then go to On-The-Go Playlist. It'll let you add songs by default, but you can navigate around like normal and add albums instead You do have to go in the album and go 'add all songs' but it's quick still.
