I don't use backgrounder often, but if say Cydia is taking a while to load or update or maybe Installous is downloading something, I can leave them running in the background whilst I do something else.

is there likely to be a windows app from the dev team for the latest firmware any time soon?

just tried to get Layar (augmented reality app) and it says it needs 3.1 (which i thought I had, but obviously not)

Nope, there isn't. They said they wouldn't be doing one.

If I can find means to back up my SMS messages, I'll probably attack my 3GS this weekend and if that's what you've got, I can save the firmware. If not, ask Burble.

iPhone has just been on Watchdog for 'Coma mode' (refusing to come out of standby mode). It's an issue with the 3.1 firmware (which they themselves admitted is fixed in 3.1.2, so it was a bit of a pointless article save for reminding people to update).

SMSs are backed up through iTunes, I've had my phone replaced recently and when I restored it, my texts all came back. They also stayed on the phone when I jailbroke it and they were also there when I de-jailbroke it afterwards.

I had this a few times, all you have to do is press on/off and the menu button randomly a few times and it comes on, and yes, since I've updated to 3.1.2 it hasn't done it

That's pretty neat

You're on Boat Drinks, reading the signature your signature could be like.
I'm on a computer.

As Feek says, everything is backed up to iTunes. I've done a few upgrades and never lost a text message.

Thanks. Just read the Apple article on what gets backed up. Pretty much everything then.

Slight complication because I can't use my normal iTunes installation to do the firmware restore. Think I can work around that one though.

You don't need to use your normal iTunes installation for a restore. I've just restored my iPhone on my netbook then plugged it back into my MacBook to restore the backup.

Not sure how I forgot this one but Lockscreen Info is great.

It shows email, phone, text, voicemail, weather, etc. on your lockscreen and is quite customisable and has lots of plugins.

You need to add these repos to cydia...
