I suggest getting a job where you don't need to iron clothes
It's the only way to be sure you're doing the right thing. I have your basic iron that gets hot and has water inside it, I've never used one of those ones with the bizarre water base thing that it sits on, so can't comment but I've never had any issues with ironing a nice going out shirt when I've needed to.
