I do the email thing too (as does my boss). In our case it's not down to truthfulness - it's down to convenience. Better have an email that you can deal with at a time that suits you than get interrupted by a phone call when you're in the middle of another job and need to concentrate. Besides, my boss never knows which of three phone numbers I'll be on, so it'd be a bit hard for him to call me.
