You only really need to see page 2 in order to get the gist of it, but I suggest you see the graphs on page 3 too. It was a real eye opener for me, as RAID-10 is the usual robotic decision I make for many applications. I imagine it still will be for a lot of things (not very often I have to consider row level striping!), but it served as a prudent eye opener. Particularly as I'm installing a brand new SAN in a couple of months and will have carte blanche to set the LUNs up how I want. A good read if you have 10 minutes.

Beansprout will be pleased no doubt given the number of RAID10 array's he's lost.
PS - I went 2xRAID1 on my home server three years ago and later discovered I had the option of RAID10 on that. When I rebuilt the array last year I stuck with 2xRAID1. Maybe I picked the wrong IT career. |
