Had exactly the same, noticed the post had arrived only to find a card saying they'd tried to deliver something about earlier on and I definitely hadn't heard a knock.
Same thing happened to my sister to, she was actually about 3 meters from the door when they apparently "rang" the doorbell.

By the number of people who turned up at the post office to collect their undelivered items, it's fairly common.

When I had it happen to me I complained - got 24 first class stamps out of it. I got told that especially in bad weather, Mr Postie would rather sit in his warm, dry van or under a shelter and write out all the cards - that way he spends minimum time just shoving the card though the letterbox rather than ringing the door and waiting.

DHL didn't even bother to leave a card to say they'd tried to deliver to me before xmas. I found out when I rang the lady I'd ordered from to discover she'd sent the item 2 weeks before. Luckily I found out that day or it would have been sent back to her the next and as it was a section of heavy chrome coated steel pole it would have cost me loads to have it redelivered.
