Default iPhone/IMAP/Email query.

Ok, so I've set up my emails now so they go to my iPhone and I can still access all of them on my macbook using Mail. First time I've ever been able to do something so advanced

I've found a problem (that's not really a problem in its own right) of deleting emails.
I like to keep my phone relatively clear of all junk/stuff that I won't need all the time.

Is there a way of deleting the emails on the phone to keep the inbox clear, without deleting them from the server so that they still show up on the mac when I turn that on?

If the answer is a straight forward no, then I'll just have to accept it

Cheers.

IMAP tends to work that way, so unless there's some way to turn that feature off, then no.

Unless, of course, the iPhone also supports POP3 (no idea if it does).

It does indeed. Surely connecting via pop would remove the email from the server, so if I received it on the iPhone I would not me able to get it on the mac without forwarding it?

I'm gonna see how I get on with this. I think I'll get used to it.

Windows has the option to leave POP3 email on the server. I have no idea if either the iPhone or Mac have this option (though I'd recommend you leave the Mac running IMAP).

You can set it to only show the last X number anyway can't you?

As Mark said, use POP3 and there should be a setting to leave a copy of the message on the server. It's a pretty standard setting so I'd be surprised if it wasn't on the iPhone.

Well the iPhone has been pretty good up until now at not having what most phones would consider 'standard' features, so I wouldn't hold my breath

I'm getting used to the whole IMAP thing now, and realised I don't actually need to clear out the inbox on my phone for any reason other than privacy and it's quite useful having all my emails there.

If it was that much of an annoyance I'd just use the webmail on the phone and use my .me email address with the mail app on it.

FWIW the leave POP on the server function is on the iPhone and works, but obviously I have to now "read" the email on both devices which is more of an annoyance

Cheers all

I prefer IMAP and use it on my phone

Mine is set to just have the last 3 days emails on there so they come and go and it all works really well.
