My family put a bet on every year. Not spoken to them so not sure if they'd won anything or not this time. |

Jumps are mostly brush, going through them wouldn't do any harm, and although it's a long race the horses are trained for it. Yesterday was perfect going hence why so many horses finished so strongly. It's when it's soaking wet and they slog through mud it's a struggle but they still love it. You REALLY cant make a horse do something it doesn't want to....did you see the horse a couple of races before who had to withdraw cause it wouldnt go forwards?

Just out of interest, had a quick read about it.
Out of 162 races, 58 horses have died (and 1 jockey). That strikes me as a lot but I have no idea if that is above or below average for horse racing.

That seems lower than I expected for a race with such a fearsome reputation.
Normally around forty starters so thats 58 out of 6480 runners.

I completely agree with you - I'm firmly against the grand national and five deaths at the 2009 meeting is shocking; but when so much money is involved, any concerns about animal welfare seem to take a back seat.
Anyway, that's all I'll say - I don't want to de-rail the thread
