I personally use VLC for EVERYTHING media. Audio and video. Works seamlessly for me.

And I have no idea about the HD stuff. This crappy laptop would probably scream in agony if I tried anything as advanced as that. Hell, it struggles to run Vista.

MPC + FFDShow and VLC for everything I've ever been able to throw at it (including those Matroska files).

VLC plays more formats, but MPC I often find is slightly better quality and less pixel'y.
