Having had a chance to reflect on yesterdays game I’ve found a few things to be positive about.
England won. Away from home and despite Wilko having a rare game where his performance barely warranted being called mediocre. It also gave him some much needed match time with Flutey outside him. This partnership will only improve with time.
There were more linebreaks than against the Welsh, but frustratingly Monye had his blinkers on and only one got finished off.
We fielded an inexperienced front row against some genuinely world class scrummagers and came out more or less even.
Italy were hugely improved from the Ireland game – I suspect that Scotland or Wales, in their current slump, might have been narrowly defeated.

The bad news was that we failed to impose enough authority on the game to play at the tempo we wanted and allowed the Italians to suck us into a kicking duel. To compound that we then kicked from hand pretty poorly.
We still need to find some willing runners to come from deep off slow ball. Our big forwards seem too content to try to pick and go from the base of the ruck which every team we’ve played against has defended comfortably.

Good god you can say that again. I feel like trying to sneak in some Wiley Coyote Style Acme Glue Gloves™ to jam on the back three... There! You have the ball, now run with it! I don't care if you have people charging at you - Run it straight back where it came from and stop kicking it straight back to them!
