The hardcore project
Most of you will know of the rave scene in the early 90's that subsequently became hardcore, jungle and drum and bass. I've been trying to relive my raving days for years and years but never quite found an efficient way to replace all my mixtapes, compilations, pirate radio recordings and records. When I was at university there were a few projects running with sites that had attempted to convert and upload their record collections but there was no easy way to download them and most were incomplete. Recently I found some archives called Label Releases which are effectively every record released in a particular year. The old skool label releases are 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995. It's been a big pruning session, getting rid of all the B sides and all the crap (and there was a lot of sifting through crap!)
I'm going to bring you some of the highlights from each of the years which I've grouped up into styles. 1993 was my favourite year and an iconic year for hardcore. The music had changed significantly from the earlier years, sampling quality was improving and the music itself was taking a number of different routes. One of the sounds was the uplifting hardcore that filled the raves - much unlike the later years. Here are a few to tune in to. I forgot how mellow they are and that they are really really long tracks! Amazing that they are 18 years old too:
