Daz, chances are you can do what I did which is install a clean copy on the lappy and then call M$ (I nearly barfed doing this) and get them to activate it... They only ask if the key has been used on anything else (my reaction was "Er... It's XP Home, you really think I'd install this on anything I wanted to use?") and they'll override the dell stuff...
But the point is I cant iinstall it without Dell media. Or generate my own key, which is just pointless in this case.

Why?

It's just components.. and I know that the O/S is registered to you (your parents) via Dell, but M$ won't give a flying fork when you activate it... If you need a hand in how to install it then give me a shout...

Because they own the software

Unfortunately MS (enterprise) licensing is something that I need to have a natural awareness of, so straying into slightly dodgy/grey territory, when I have a good license ready and waiting just with no media, is just daft to me.

I'm with Daz on this, painful though it is. What I do to my own machines is my own business, but I'd never knowingly shove warez on someone else's PC - especially not in the family.

Worst case I'd give Dell support a try, but I'm not entirely sure how helpful they'd be.
