Help oh mighty PC personages!

My pc is made up of castoffs from my ex's pc. I know NOTHING about it, other than it's black with a funky blue light on the front.

It makes a noise when it's been on for about 10 minutes, kind of like a anaemic ambulance which I understand means its overheating. To be honest I ignore it

nothing has blown up yet and its been doing it for months. But I do notice it's getting a bit slower in it's old age poor thing. Also, I'd like to get some speakers (at the moment I have to have stuff reeeeally loud so I can hear it from some headphones which are on the desk...I cant put them on because then I wont be able to hear when Daisy starts dismembering the gerbils) but I cant have speakers cause then I'll hear that noise all the time which will drive me nuts.

My question really is what is likely to be making it make that noise? And how do I make it stop it? And dont report me for pc abuse, I weren't me guvner!

It could be the fan on the CPU cooler either failing or in need of a clean.

Download something like SpeedFan and try and find out what specifically is overheating, we'll go from there

The facts in combination suggest the fan on the CPU cooler is either caked in dust or has stopped working.

Here's the SpeedFan link. Install it, run it, grab a screenshot and post it here. We'll be able to confirm the diagnosis.

The noise is probably coming from the PCs internal speaker so adding speakers may not amplify it.

My suggestion with the overheating would be to clean the heatsink on the CPU, just take the side off and give it a hoover, or call Huddy, I'm sure he'll use his 1337 PC repair skills for the price of a cup of tea

Yep my guess is a combination of 1. the fan has copped it on the cpu cooler or is full of dust and 2. it'll be from the internal speaker as Matt says.

In most motherboards you can have a warning when the cpu temp goes over a certain value. This is a two-tone alarm that goes off. If you venture into the bios you will be able to turn this off and ignore it for a bit longer. The downside is if its anything bad, then it could cook the cpu

the noise is coming out of the headphones, not the actual computer bit

Depends on what packages you have got.

You press print screen which is the little button next to the F12 button on the top of the keyboard.
Then go into Word or something and press ctrl-V

voila, and the work is done
