KK I'm not expert but I could certainly come and give you a hand some time.

Sorry for major bump but my test is in a couple weeks so I am thinking about this a lot more now
![]() Less than five years old, ideally. I want something comfortable, reliable, and not too expensive - which I can insure easily when I pass my test. That means group 1/2 if I am not mistaken.

The real question should be....what's your budget?
![]() And is the budget just for car? Or car and insurance?

![]() I was thinking definitely no more than £3k for a car, and insurance will cost me £1k+ no matter what I get so you could call it £4k tops. But of course, if I can get away with paying less then I'll obviously be glad ![]()

Personally a nice banger should be your first car, loads on insurance and a car for around 1k

I wouldn't pay more than 1k for your first car.

Agree with the above two posts. For £1k you can get a decent first car that's got service history. Just because it's a few years old doesn't mean it's falling to pieces. Take someone who knows cars to look at it, and then spend a bit on some decent breakdown cover. Invest the £2k you have in a high interest account and then you've got a bit of money if you *do* happen to need expensive repairs, or you've got a good start in a couple of years on a nice car.
My first car was a £200 Austin Allegro and I've gone downhill since then ![]() |

I spent just under £900 on my car about a year and a half ago, touch wood, the worst it's needed doing is a couple of new tyres
![]() Just a matter of checking it out before you buy, I got lucky with future repairs but it was in good nick when I bought it and had a full MOT etc. I'm hoping sometime next year to be able to upgrade to a better car but it'll be a while and tbh the only thing that annoys me about my current car is it feels a bit slow now (1.2l) but when I first had it, it felt great and ideal for my inexperience. ![]()

So with £1k in mind, what sort of cars should I be looking at?
