Be very careful about where 98 install it's bootloader though. Even PE2 (Vista's installer) uses its own judgement about where to put the bootloader, lord knows what 98 will decide.

If it overwrites your current boot loader, you'll need to use the recovery console to get it back. Safest option is to install with only 1 hard drive in the system.

Also, can 98 use NTFS? If so dont let it, if XP detects the partition it'll update the version and 98 wont boot. Had that with NT4 (pre SP6).

No, 98 can't use NTFS. Well, not without 3rd party software. Bootloader might be a problem though (I believe the safest bet is 98 first, then XP).

Get some cpu throttling tools - I've used them in the past for old games. A lot of games use the clock cycles to count "events" and obviously things get out of time and happen either too quickly or erroneously. Then you can run w98 on a spare HDD and throttle the speed so it all works well.

That's the order I always did it. Install Win 98 on C: partition -> pop in Win XP CD -> Fresh install to D: partition. Always worked perfectly. Of course, in KK's case that would mean a format and re-install of everything, something I doubt he'd want to do

Best bet really is to install 98 with only 1 disk in the system. Then as long as that drive is seen as secondary to the XP one (the order your BIOS presents the disks to the system), you'll be able to use MB's method (which I've used in the past on a couple of linux installs).

Is there a way to make that work without a full reformat? Bearing in mind my spare drive is a SATA job and my current XP install resides on a SATA RAID array...
