Micheal Franti and Spearhead - Stay Human
This is a lovely album from a hugely under rated artist, Michael Franti has been active in the Hip Hop scene since the inception a founder member of the Disposable Heros of Hop Hoprisy. He founded Spearhead in the 90s, a band with a message which they hammered home with funky beats and rapier lyrics, Home and Chocolate Superhighway were activist records in exactly the way NWAs weren't, the lyrics preached peace whilst drawing attention to inequality and lets face it Marijuana. The next album Stay Human was a departure, Franti mellowed and Stay Human is mellow, the rap aspects are reigned back for funky beats and soulful tunes. The album is essentially a concept album, (very unusual in this genre) and revolves around a radio station's coverage of a high profile death row case, the case of Sister Fatima, a neighbourhood healer. In reality the story is a way for Franti to promote one of his own causes, he is very anti death penalty but the passion converts to beautiful music so whatever your politics you can enjoy the album. I have a lot of respect for Franti, he's an old hippy, goes through live not wearing shoes and advocating yoga but he's committed to his message and surrounds it with amazing tunes some of the best dub artists around. Cherine Anderson who sings on All Rebel Rockers which is Franti's latest album has an amazing voice straight from a Jamaican dance hall sound system. http://www.metacritic.com/music/arti...head/stayhuman Give it a try Stay Human MB |
