Default Why are posh fairy cakes so popular?

As title, why are posh fairy cakes so popular at the moment? Everywhere is full of them and girls can't get enough. They're like £2.50 EACH as well! For a cupcake! Are people completely mad?

£2.50!?!? They're like 99p round here and about a fiver for a box of 12 from costco.

They're supersickly too, there's no way you could eat a whole one in one go.

They're not at all. The lemon ones are divine. They had them on testing at our M&S a few months ago to see whether people would buy them and me & Mum tried them. They had lemon and strawberry iirc and both had a soft jammy filling with buttercream icing. Absolutely gorgeous. I wouldn't buy them normally though as I prefer making them

That's still 99p for a cupcake!!!

I can't be the only one that thinks this is outrageous!!!

I saw the £2.50 ones at the Thames festival yesterday and they had no problem shifting them at that price.

These are easily the same size as a regular muffin though, and you'd expect to pay that for them in a coffee shop or similar.

Ok so it's not the money. Why kitsch fairy cakes then, when a normal iced fair cake is no different? Is it a Cath Kidston thing?

It's a fashion thing, don't know why but even our company has started selling a cup cake mix.
