Default Laptop optical drives

Are they all created equal? Or are they specific to make/model and are there compatability issues?

The actual drive bit seems to be the same but the drawer and fascia is different for almost every model, unfortunately

hmm I guess it depends what laptop you have...

I swapped out drives in an Acer travelmate 230xc the fascia is a slightly different colour but nothing to cry about

Yeah there are generic drives that some laptops use, others are a little more custom, but use the same hardware with the same interface. So it depends, ebay im sure is pretty good for a like for like replacement though...

I have a the CDRW/DVD combi drive I pulled out of my acer I can send to you to try.. If it works it's yours for £49.49

Have you tried eBuyer? They used to stock laptop drives.
