Default Favourite Lyrics

I just thought, from the "Songs you don't understand" thread, that it would be good to post those lyrics that have some real meaning, or simply make you happy.

I love this song mainly for the blatent sexuality of the lyrics, although it also harks back to the flush of young love and reminds me of the thrill of those first encounters...

[Velvet Green - Jethro Tull]
Won't you have my company, yes, take it in your hands.
Go down on velvet green, with a country man.
Who's a young girls fancy and an old maid's dream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north.
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth.
Where the scent of wild roses turns the milk to cream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
And the long grass blows in the evening cool.
And August's rare delight may be April's fool.
But think not of that, my love, I'm tight against the seam.
And I'm growing up to meet you down on velvet green.

The next one I love because of the way it invokes my memories of growing up on the farm, the mysticysm and superstition that goes with the country, and because it ends on an image of bright days and fair winds, lasting eternaly, just like the remembered summers of my youth...

[Weathercock - Jethro Tull]
Good morning Weathercock: How did you fare last night?
Did the cold wind bite you, did you face up to the fright
When the leaves spin from October and whip around your tail?
Did you shake from the blast, did you shiver through the gale?

Give us direction; the best of goodwill,
Put us in touch with your fair winds.
Sing to us softly, hum evening's song.
Tell us what the blacksmith has done for you.

Do you simply reflect changes in the patterns of the sky,
Or is it true to say the weather heeds the twinkle in your eye?
Do you fight the rush of winter; do you hold snowflakes at bay?
Do you lift the dawn sun from the fields and help him on his way?

Good morning Weathercock: make this day bright.
Put us in touch with your fair winds.
Sing to us softly, hum evening's song.
Point the way to better days we can share with you.

And this little snippet I like simply because it breaks down the meaning of a well known phrase to its logical conclusion, and shows that, in its basic context, the saying makes little sense

[Shut Up - Madness]
I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight, the less I do wrong

I love a number of lyrics. The first ones that come to mind (from memory) are:

Must have been relieved to see
The softer side
I can understand how you'd be so confused
I don't envy you
I'm a little bit of everything
All rolled into one
Chorus:
I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

So take me as I am
This may mean
You'll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that
When I start to make you nervous
And I'm going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change
And today won't mean a thing

Chorus

Just when you think, you got me figured out
The season's already changing
I think it's cool, you do what you do
And don't try to save me

Chorus

I'm a bitch, I'm a tease
I'm a goddess on my knees
When you hurt, when you suffer
I'm your angel undercover
I've been numb, I'm revived
Can't say I'm not alive
You know I wouldn't want it any other way

I've refrained from posting the entire Alanis ' You oughta know', but by GOD do I feel every word she sings in that song?!

Love the rawness of this. Possibly means more to me as I was in a long distance relationship for 5 years!

Pixies - Cactus.

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

I put it on when I grow lonely
Will you take off your dress and send it to me?

I miss your kissin' and I miss your head
And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
Run outside in the desert heat
Make your dress all wet and send it to me

I miss your soup and I miss your bread
And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
So spill your breakfast and drip your wine
Just wear that dress when you dine

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

Bloody your hands on a cactus tree
Wipe it on your dress and send it to me

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

Kitten - seconded! Good choices! And Berrrrrta!

Bill Withers...

Quote:
Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you don't let show

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me

So just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'd understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Lean on me...
Tis a beautiful song. Makes me smile

Stereophonics: Just Looking

Quote:
I'm just looking, I'm not buying
I'm just looking, keeps me smiling
Very apt for a lot of my life Bit of a watcher!

Also...

Stereophonics - I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio:

Quote:
If I had myself a flying giraffe, I would have it in a box with a window
Makes me giggle! Hehehehe! Stereophonics Is Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today also means a lot to me!

The Killers - All These Things That I've Done

Quote:
I've got soul but I'm not a soldier
Dunno why just love that! Good choon!

Train - Drops of Jupiter

Quote:
Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's a time to change, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way
To see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star?
One without a permanent scar
And then you missed me
While you were looking for yourself out there?
I love this song! Makes me belt out goodness!

Baz Luhrman - Sunscreen

Quote:
Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours. Floss Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own.. Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen…
Simply the best song to listen to when all things are poop. Sensible man he is. Sensible!

I like it when lyrics are like poetry. Doesn't have to be much, like Dave Matthews' The Dreaming Tree:

Quote:
Now progress takes away what forever took to find
Or Dire Straits classic Telegraph Road...

Quote:
The other travellers came walking down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back
Then came the churches, then came the schools
Then came the lawyers, then came the rules

She's A Star is brilliant, I listen to it a lot. 'Much brighter than all this static, now she's coming through' is just one of many evocative lyrics.

A favourite of mine is from the lesser known Oasis song 'Hello' (though not so lesser known for those of us that bought What's The Story when it came out and it was the first track on the album!).

'It's never gonna be the same, cos the years are falling by like the rain.'

It's a sad, simple and powerful simile and fits the song so well.

An old friend sent me the CD single (remember them!?) of She's a Star. Said they heard it and the lyrics made them think of me. Loved it ever since

Had the same thing happen in high school with Invisible Touch from an ex. Don't think he was too impressed with being dumped

A great lyric from the FLC. We all fight for what we think is right, but there's no way of knowing how it will all turn out until you can look back on the outcome. Many have fought for an ideal that has turned sour, or has been judged later as evil, regressive or pointless.
