USB Keylogger
Has anybody had/used such a device?
I'm looking at possibly investing in one for use at home. Younger brother is getting himself into a lot of trouble recently and both my dad and his mum are having force the issue to see things that answer questions that are being put to him (checking ebay messages after he lied about an issue etc.). I know that he's created multiple email accounts and other such accounts (some of which we have seen, others he's denying or refusing access). It's a case of needing to clear a lot of issues up before he's in much more serious problems. To force his hand on accessing an email account will be the least of his worries. **Edit** I can't use a software keylogger as I've got Kaspersky AV installed (which will pick-up on things - plus I don't quite fancy installing unknown software). |

What is his computer know-how like?
If you really don't want him to find out then it would be safer to use software. He may go to plug in a memory stick and then see it...

Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped writing about other things and made this your signature, yours could be like mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? You're on Boat Drinks, reading the signature your signature could be like. I'm on a computer. |

A quick Google shows loads of these on the market including a model which can be hidden inside the keyboard so even if someone checked the cable they wouldn't see anything out of the ordinary!

Or the non sugar-coated option.....remove his computer?
It, like most things children have, is a privilege and not a right. Maybe it's time to remind him of that? |

Depending on how young I suppose. I've used a software one before, no AV picked it up and it worked on startup and stayed hidden - this was yeeears ago though and I have no idea what it was called.

USB keyloggers are cheap and common, if you know where to look. Only viable though if the PC is somewhere where a USB port isn't easy to see.
Alternative, techy, solution. Route his traffic via your PC and hit it with wireshark. It's a lot of work to unpick the data but you'll get a much better view of what's going on that way (keyloggers only work if you know or can guess what's being typed into at the time). Doesn't work for encrypted traffic obviously, which could be a problem since he knows he's being snooped upon. Of course, none of this works if the 'crime' happens on a phone/work/school/library connection. Which is likely what will happen if the home PC gets banished. Failing that, ditch the covert and confront it head-on. Last edited by Mark; 31-01-2012 at 01:44. |
