Thought I'd post this. Shocking though the crime is, my motivation was more because it's a in certain well-known member's neighbourhood.

After shooting his family, the guy went down his local nick, opened up a bag, told whoever was on the front desk not to panic, and then proceeded to empty out a small arsenal of weaponry.

So, then Von, what would you do if this happened to you? I'm sure there's procedures for that sort of thing, so now's your chance.

If he pulled a pump action from a bag, even meaning to hand himself in, I would not have approached him and got onto to control room for an ARV to travel immediately.

If, and I mean IF I could engage him in conversation safely in that I could see he was empty handed and he obeyed commands to remove his jacket so I could see no hidden weapons, maybe then he would be instructed to kneel, cross his legs over and interlace his fingers on top of his head.

Then, it's a judgement call. If he decides to go off again then a baton, incapacitant spray and handcuffs are no use against a pistol, pump action shotgun and an nail laden IED. Bear in mind that radios and mobiles are not meant to be used where there is a danger of an IED as some are detonated by remote signal.

The best weapon I would have there is damned good communication ...... as an ARV may be some time away. He was compliant here but that does not mean he should be trusted in any way. He is ex-military and competant in the us of firearms and explosives and that is a frighteningly dangerous combination of specialist knowledge. Couple that with extreme mental anguish and that danger increases manyfold.

There is certainly no procedure I know of for something like that and it literally a call on the day.
