Default Wireless Media Players

I'm looking for a device i can leave plugged into a scart connection on my tv which can connect up to my wireless network and play avi's / mpeg's / mp3's from my pc. I don't want to spend too much so anything cheap will be considered. Also i'm curious as to how it will manage with different codecs etc.

One of my colleagues mentioned the Netgear Wireless EVA700 Digital Entertainer but it's well over what i want to pay for it really.

Looks ok, don't need the dvd player in it though so im guessing you can get a cheaper one without? I don't like the idea of having to install software on my pc in order to use it.

Found a couple of others but all ~£100. It's too much to spend just to stop me having to get a couple of cables from the study to connect my laptop to the tv.

It's probably inevitable though, I believe these things work using UPNP media servers (much simpler than traditional file sharing or whatever, given the use), and Windows doesn't have one by default (though having said that I'm not sure if Windows Media Connect will do it).

Could be wrong on that though, I just use the 360 to stream all my media, and haven't looked a great deal into devices like these.

Yeah, I agree with Daz, software is inevitable for these, and I doubt you'll find anything as cheap as it sounds like you're looking for. Best stick with the laptop.

Not something I've looked into either - there's a PC permanently connected into my home cinema setup for two-way media sharing.
