Backup Options

I did a search... for a bit... but I'm lazy

One of my friends has asked me about backup options. I've already pointed him in the direction of the WD USB drive posted here recently as hardware, but he's also after some decent software which will do automated backups of important personal files (He does a lot of photography and so wants to make sure that's not lost should nastiness occur... Although I built the PC, so it won't

).

Does anyone know of some decent software which is nice and simple and will automatically run backups on a regular basis to ensure that his files are kept safe?

copy?

What particular features is he after dude? Unless you want something to manage some sort of rotation scheme, a scheduled copy/xcopy/robocopy job would work just fine.

The WD drive probably comes with some, though I don't know how good it is (even though I have a couple of external WD drives).

Think he's after the whole automated backup option, since I don't run backups (other than my music collection being backup up through auto-sync on my MP3 player) then your crazy words mean nothing to me!

A scheduled backup is automated - you dont need to do anything to set if off, it's scheduled

If you want a GUI built into Windows then look at ntbackup. It's more powerful than people think.

True dat. It's the only backup software I've ever used (though I've had a play with others).

I use Acronis true Image - a fantastic backing up tool - it's saved my bacon many times, and can compress large bits of data onto relatively small drive (250gb).

Compression doesn't really concern me. I just need the backup software to be reliable. I was using Nero backup for years.. Last year (some of you may remember) it let me down big time. I lost 6 months worth of digital photos when my HDD failed. I was gutted to learn that the external backed weren't working. When i needed it most, it failed!!!

I just do a straight folder copy to the external HDD now.

I have wondered with Arconis, does it let you view and restore individual files? I take it they are incremental backups?

Does anyone use XPs backup feature?

I use ntbackup for quite a few things at work, but at home it's a combination of image backups ('dd' in linux, dont like the extra layer of a third party product, but the 'bare metal' restore capability of an image backup is very good) and straight file copies using either robocopy or rsync, depending on the platform.

We use robocopy here... seems to work well although i have nothing to do with operations so not seen it.
