Stuff to do when buying a 2nh hand car

I've never bought a car ever, so dunno what the steps are. It's come to a point in my life now where I need a car to go from A to B where public transport is just not good enough in the area.

Provided that I go see a car and like it, what do I do next?

I know I should need a test drive so can you get like a 1 day insurance somewhere for this? and then when you decide to buy the car, and after checking all the documents are correct, is there some kind of contract or something you sign to prove to the DVLA the car now belongs to you? And does the road tax apply to the car and does it get transfer when you buy it too ?
