Default XP Home install..

I have a PC in which the HDD has failed. The owner has the license key (side of case) but doesn't have the original disks.

If I replace the HDD and re-installed windows from one of my XP install disks but use her license, will this work/activate legally? I can't see why not.. Otherwise I'd have to charge her for a new copy of XP home.

What do you think?

Thanks

Yep, no problem at all. All installation disks are identical, they have no information relating to the license at all - I do it all the time

Just be sure you use an OEM disc, not retail, as it wont accept the key Otherwise you'll be fine and legal, though it might need a phone activation.

Hrm, mine didn't work when I tried that on a friend's disk that was severely scratched.

Could be the OEM vs Retail problem that Daz stated. So long as you use like-for-like it should work.
