Default Calories and Walking long distance

Quick question re calories and that kind of shnizzle. I am doing a charridy walk for Children in Need in November so am starting to get stuff planned for it now. How many calories would I expect to burn in around 10 hours. The route is around 37 miles in an urban environment

Cheers

Not many

The body is surprisingly feul efficient at walking speed, somewhere between 75 and 150 depending on your body weight is a reasonable guess. If we say 100 for arguments sake you will burn approx 3500 calories which is equal to the energy stored in one lb of body weight!

I was in Munich and did a 12 mile walk one day. You can get a pedometer that sits in your pocket and tells you how many steps you've done and how many calories you've burned. I think it was about 400 for 12 miles.

Nope, gotta work harder than that

That's not to say that walking isn't good for you, but if you want to drop some fat, you need to keep yourself working harder for a longer period

From About.com:

Quote:
Your weight x distance = energy used walking. Time does not matter as much as distance. If you speed up to walking a mile in 13 minutes or less, you will be burning more calories per mile. But for most beginning walkers, it is best to increase the distance before working on speed. A simple rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile for a 180 pound person.
So MB's estimation is pretty much spot on.

Sort of, there are ways increase calorie usage in a shorter period of time but they do require you to work a lot harder, HIIT for example is a good way of burning cals quickly but you have to be prepared to go through a certain amount of pain to achieve it.

10 blocks of Dairy Milk will cost you 2.5 miles walking.

when you say 10 blocks... do you mean 10 bars? whole bars?
When I said "eat loads of chocolate" I didn't quite mean that much!

Or Did you mean 10 little squares? In which case 2.5 miles for 10 little squares of chocolate?!?!
