Is this the sort of thing I need? I'm sure Martin said something about this one. Flashes are SOOOOOOOOooooo expensive

Fill in flash outside, indoor work for events with a diffuser or bouncing off the ceiling, the internal flash on the 300d is OK but its not great. Its really a case of being prepared in case I want to take any indoor stuff in the future, so a good all rounder really.

Whats all this TTL stuff by the way?

TTL = through the lens

ie. the camera decides how bright the flash needs to be, rather than you manually setting the power and zoom yourself every time.

Ooooooo that sounds rather useful; so the flash would fire more brightly in a larger darker room than in a smaller lighter room?

Yeah pretty much

The flash can zoom too, so (if it's anything like mine) it will zoom in accordance with the lens. ie. 50mm lens, the flash zooms so it only fills a 50mm field of view with light and doesn't waste the rest.

Then it'll also change the power based on what it feels is required to light the subject/scene/whatever you've got the camera set to.

Now that is clever, so unlike these muppets who have their flash going off at a large event where it just disperses over the few rows in front at medium distances the flash might actually reach the subject?

The range is still clearly going to be limited, but with intelligent flash and usable high ISO you'll stand a fair deal better chance than the average muppet with their compact camera who either don't know better or expect miracles.

Yeah but only to a point.

There is something to do with ISO (as in the standards group, not sensor sensitivity) ratings that will tell you how far away a flash can light a subject at a given field of view.

I've never really bothered to try and understand it though as I basically had a choice of SB-600 or SB-600 when I bought mine.
