I don't think society has a problem with disfigurement and disability...

I know these people have it harsh, but I think its the natural order for disfigured people to have it harsh. Could be a lot worse than people looking twice at you in the street... |

"others turn away out of embarrassment. "
I think this is a false statement.. I think that people are initially drawn to something different.. which it is .. then are curios... but then don't want to offend the person.. I don't think it's embarrassment. "We don't have to be PC about it. We can't deal with it until people are aware of what they are thinking." I don't think this will change becuase of the human nature of curosity.. but it's nothing more really.

I think people with disabilities are quite happy for people to ask about things, rather than staring at you like you like a freak. |

*stares at MM*
It cant be nice, being the focus of peoples curiosity, but Huddy's right, it is very rarely born out of anything other than interest.

Believe it or not, I was going to post a thread about this earlier.
When I see people like this in the street, they are no different to anyone else IMO, they always seem to be on the lookout for people looking at them though, so when/if we make eye contact, I normally smile at them and carry on. Its not hard not to stare tbh |

My gf's brother was just over from the states and his is disabled. He walks with a cane, has a brain injury and some of his muscles in his face don't work great so he can't really pull his top lip down. And when he was over, i didn't notice anyone staring at him, people just took him as normal really.
Although he doesn't have serious disfigurements or that, it is still noticeable, plus he has some scars. But like i said, nobody stared, and whenever we where places everyone was very helpful if we needed it (although we didn't need much help)

My brother is disabled, his main disability is with his feet and legs, but he has a number of other problems.
His feet arch out badly to the sides, so he doesn't walk like the normal person. It is very noticeable to other people and I think people look just out of curiosity, it's hard to ignore it and not to look. In my opinion it's fine for people to look and see what's going on, and then continue on with there journey, but when they blatently stand and stare, that's when it gets really annoying. |

Heh, they should try it with an invisible disability.
For those scratching their heads wondering what I'm talking about - my son is autistic. Some of the reactions we get out in public when Patrick acts up or does something out of the norm are incredibly annoying. But, it's part of life. You either take it in stride and continue on, or you let it eat you up and become miserable.
