Default Some tips on a camera?

I'm not planning on getting into photography big time but would like to have one that is a bit more capable than your run of the mill, take out on the piss compact jobby. I've spoken to someone with this model and they said it had a lot of useful features without being overwhelming:

I really have no idea what I'm looking for and, while I plan to do some research I thought I'd ask you guys too!

The Panasonic DMC-TZ5 is an absolutely fantastic camera. It isn't an SLR, but has the distinct advantage that it is small and as a result, you can have it on you at all times - go for it!

In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance.

In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

Yeah, probably too big as I plan to use it socially a lot and don't fancy carrying something that big around all the time. But thanks for the suggestion!

We've got the older TZ3. The zoom is great and overall it's a nice, slightly bigger compact camera with some great features. Only thing I don't like about it is that there are very few manual controls.
