Sports Weekend 08/09/10 November

Something a bit different for the sports fans amongst us on BD Rather than keeping it just to football, I will try and include the major sporting fixtures of the weekend for you to debate, discuss and have a good old bit of banter about.

So kicking off with the footy

Barclays Premier League

Saturday 8th November
Arsenal v Man Utd, 12:45
Hull v Bolton, 15:00
Liverpool v West Brom, 17:30
Sunderland v Portsmouth, 15:00
West Ham v Everton, 15:00
Wigan v Stoke, 12:45

Sunday, 9 November 2008
Aston Villa v Middlesbrough, 15:00
Blackburn v Chelsea, 13:30
Fulham v Newcastle, 16:00
Man City v Tottenham, 15:00

Good set of fixtures this weekend and with all the top four clubs having varying degrees of success in Europe. Apart from the United Arsenal game the stand out fixture is City vs Spurs. Spuds certainly seem rejuneated under 'Appy 'Arry. Shock Horror, he's playing players in their proper positions and they are now stringing some form together. Robhinio is starting to settle in quite niceley at Middle Eastlands as well. As for the Arsenal United Game then it points to a draw. Arsenal have too many injuries and they don't have the personell to do much damage. United very rarely do well straight after a European game. Last Euro outing we let Everton look good

Rugby

A big weekend of Rugby coming up this weekend as Jonno takes the reigns of the England side for the first time. He has rung the changes and looks like he will do it his way. You would expect he should have a comortable introduction to International Rugby with the match against the Pacific Islanders. However the one to watch maybe in Cardiff as Wales take on the A full strength Spring Boks Side. This should be a game that sees plenty of attacking Rugby.

League wise we have a very poor and demoralised England side take on an indifferent All Blacks side. Tony Smith is set to ring the changes. Not that he had much choice due to injuries. The game against The Aussies is possibly the worst I have seen England/Great Britain play in a good number of years. It's worth noting that this isn't the best Green and Gold side either.

Boxing

A fight too far for one of Britains most under rated fighters for a number of years ?? Frank Warren described him the best British Boxer of a generation. I think both of them are a little past their best but boy what a career he has had and he probably does deserve this high profile bout.

I just hope we give the same display against the All Blacks as we did in the test series last year.

Calzaghe = Legend, and he should retire now with his legacy intact, and go down as one of the best boxers of all time. There's no one left with a big enough name to give him anything should he beat them, so he shouldn't risk fighting an up and comer who would have everything to gain by beating him. Well done Joe

Got to agree with that Davey. I think Boxing has seen a steady decline from the 70's and 80's with too many big name fighters opting for one last pay cheque. They get beat and so there reputation gets tarnished. Joe has done enough for the sport and now would be a great time to bow out as a legend.

Yeah, Boxing has turned into a money sport, a shame, but there have been exceptions, Lewis being the notable one where he only lost twice (both to ridiculously lucky 1 off punches, though he deserved the Rahmann loss for underestimating him and not acclimatising to the South African height), but he beat everyone he ever fought and retired arguably as he was about to decline.

It's when you see people like the greats, Tyson, De La Hoya and Jones Jr. just continuing.

The heavyweight division is also at it's lowest standard possibly ever, you know it's bad that for 5 years our top Heavyweight was Danny Williams, thank God Haye will step up.
